This Web-based chat runs off a Java applet called ConferenceRoom, so your browser will need to have Java enabled in order to use it.

A neat thing about ConferenceRoom is that it's IRC-compatible. That is, if you're already accustomed to Internet Relay Chat, you'll find that you can use many of the commands you already know. You can, for example, use /me, /join and /msg. (Don't know what those terms mean? Explanations will follow.)

Chat rooms generated by ConferenceRoom are also available using traditional IRC clients like mIRC. That's right! You can reach these chat rooms using your regular IRC chat program. Here are the settings you'll need to connect:

We feel these ConferenceRoom Web-based chats will be especially handy for new users who are looking for an easy way to chat and are not yet ready to tackle the complexities of IRC. Though we do want to encourage everyone to make use of the established IRC Lois & Clark chat channels -- that's "where the action is," because that's where most people go to chat! (Click for info on these channels.)

We think of our Web-based chat rooms as casual meeting places, sort of like those rooms at the public library that are available for impromptu meetings. They're here for you to use if you like. Wherever and however you chat, we hope you enjoy many happy hours discussing Lois & Clark fanfic.

New to chatting? Here's your quick-start guide

Is it easy to chat? Easy as 1-2-3!

    1. The first thing you do, on the initial Conference Room screen, is type a name for yourself in the "Your nickname" field.
    2. Click the button called "Connect." After a little bit you'll be transported to the chat window.
    3. Behold, the chat window!

Oh, yeah, a few more steps. :)

    4. Notice that your nickname appears in the list of people who've come to chat.
    5. Type your messages in the text field and press the Enter key when you're finished. This is the crucial step. See? Easy!
    6. Watch your conversation unfold.

    IRC cheat sheet

Here's a quick-and-dirty list of IRC commands you can use in ConferenceRoom. Note that all commands begin with a forward slash (/).

/join - creates and logs you into a new chat channel (aka room). Note that you'll get a button at the bottom of the chat window showing the new room along with all the other rooms you've joined. You can click the buttons to move back and forth among the rooms in order to participate in multiple chats. Example:

/me - allows you to make a narrative comment about what you're doing. Example:

/msg - lets you send a private message to another chatter. Example:

/quit - logs you out of all chat rooms, returning you to the ConferenceRoom intro screen.

That's enough for starters. More to follow!

    ConferenceRoom rules

These rules flashed by in lovely yellow-on-gray as you logged into ConferenceRoom (yes, we're trying to work on the color scheme):

  • No Nuking allowed.
  • No child pornography.
  • No advertising.
  • No war scripts will be accepted here.
  • And NO Trojans. DCC sending of these viruses is NOT allowed.
