If I Told You That I Love You

By Vanna (spinto@mi.montreal.com.br)

Summary: During an hours-long stakeout at S.T.A.R. Labs, Lois and Clark begin to admit their feelings for each other. A pre-relationship story that takes place soon after the episode "That Old Gang of Mine." Note: This story is after "The Old Gang Of Mine", so Lois doesn't know that Clark and Superman are the same but she already knows that Clark isn't just a friend for her.

Three hours had passed since Lois and Clark had stopped the car in front of the S.T.A.R Labs. It was already obvious that nothing was going to happen, they knew it, even Perry knew it. *Why did he send us to this stupid assignment,* Lois thought.

Clark was sitting in the passenger seat, he took a look inside and was sure there was nothing to be seen. He laid his head down and started to look at Lois. When he saw that Lois realized it he was going to turn around but he decided not to. Lois started to feel a little uncomfortable, at first she thought it was just her imagination but it wasn't .

"What?!" Lois asked nervously.

"Umm?"

"What are you looking at?!"

"You," said Clark smoothly.

For a moment they gazed in each other's eyes and Lois started to blush. Lois didn't know what to do so she quickly said. "Nothing is going to happen so why don't we just go back to the Planet?" she started the car before Clark could say something.

There was a cold silence between them when they stepped out of the elevator. Lois sat at her desk and Clark followed her standing by her side. Perry came out of his office. "So what did you two get for me?" he asked with a grin on his face.

"Nothing, Perry, we stayed there for three and a half hours and nothing happened. I'm telling you, next time send someone else," Lois said really angrily as she got up and walked away, heading to the elevator . "I'm going home!"

"Son, what happened?"

"I don't know, chief, suddenly she said that nothing was going to happen and we came here. I guess she got upset cuz we wasted our time, I don't know. I already finished that article you asked for, I'll just print it and go home."

"OK, son."

When Lois got home she found her sister sitting on the couch.

"Lucy, what are you doing here?" she asked, confused by all that had happened.

"Hi, sis, sorry for coming without talking to you first but I couldn't find you all week and your machine was off, even mom tried to…" Lucy stopped talking when she realized that Lois wasn't paying any attention to her.

"Lois, is everything OK?"

"Yeah, I'm fi… no, I'm not OK," after a while she continued, "Remember when I last talked to you, after Clark being 'murder'? When I told you that I think that I'm in love with him or something?"

"Yes."

"Today Perry assignment us to this story and we had a source that said that something was going to happen tonight at S.T.A.R labs, so naturally we went there. We spent more than three hours just watching nothing happen. I don't know why but suddenly I started to look to Clark and I was thinking 'god, he's so gorgeous', but I stopped when I realized he had realized that I was looking at him. After a moment I looked at him quickly and saw that he was looking at me then I thought 'come on, Lois, get a grip he isn't looking at you,' but he was and then…"

"Then what?"

"Then it started to bother me so I said 'What are you looking at?' and he said 'You. ' When he said that, I froze from head to toe. I got so nervous that I drove us back to the Planet, yelled at Perry and here I am and I don't know what to do."

"Well sis, it's obvious that he doesn't consider you just a friend. Why don't you talk to him about it or just let things happen?"

"Lucy, I don't know, last year after Luthor died he said he was lying about being in love with me. What if I tell him and he doesn't feel the same?"

"You have to try or you will never know."

"Hi, mom, hi, dad."

"Hi, son, has something happened?" asked Martha.

"I can't call my parents just to say hi?"

"Sure, sweetheart, but there's something different in your voice."

"Something happened today."

"Is everything OK? Are you OK, son?"

"Yes, dad. It's Lois. We were in the car tonight and something happened."

"Something happened? You heard that, Jonathan?!"

"Martha, let the boy talk."

"First she started to look at me, I don't know why and when she realized I realized she stopped. Then I started to look at her and she asked what was I looking at and, I don't know why I answered that but I said 'you'. she looked at me again and drove us to the Planet without saying a word. And now I don't know what to do."

"Clark, it isn't that difficult. You just have to talk to her."

"What am I supposed to say? ' Hi Lois , I love you and, by the way, I'm Superman?!'"

"I don't know, dear, but you can't let this go, not talking will just make things worse."

"I guess you are right, mom, thanks."

"Goodnight, sweet."

"Goodnight, boy."

"Goodnight."

The next morning, Clark realized that Lois was avoiding being alone with him. He didn't understand why she got so upset about the car thing. It was eleven o'clock when they finished their article. Lois said goodbye to everyone and headed to the elevator, quickly Clark followed her and when he was starting to talk the door opened and they weren't alone. They walked together in silence till they got in the car.

"Do you want me to drive you home?" Lois asked.

"Yes …"

When Lois was opening the car, Clark held her hand and said looking into her eyes, "But don't you want to have dinner first? I know a quiet place that we can walk to. The food is great and we can sit and …talk."

"OK."

They crossed the street and after ten long minutes of walking, they got to the restaurant, it was near an alley, was small and comfortable. When they got there they only saw another couple sitting at a private table. Clark was looking carefully for a place where they wouldn't be bothered. They sat down, the waiter brought the menu and the white wine they had ordered.

"So … you wanted to talk," Lois said anxiously.

"First I want to know why you were so upset the other day in the car."

"I wasn't upset, I just needed to rest. Why do you think that?"

"Oh, you were not … right. You just yelled at Perry and ran cuz you were tired. I don't think so."

" What do you mean?"

"I mean you avoided me all week, you were going to do that tonight too, weren't you?"

"Please, Clark, get to the point."

When Clark opened his mouth to talk the waiter came with their dinner. As they ate, neither of them talked about that subject, Lois tried to keep a soft conversation going and maybe Clark would forgot what they really had to talk about. They had finished dinner and while they waited for the check, Clark started:

"My point is, something happened. At first I thought only I have seen it but you have too. That night I couldn't help but notice how beautiful you are, in truth I keep noticing it every day since I came to Metropolis," now he was looking deep in her eyes.

"Clark…"

"What I'm trying to say is that I love you. I know, you love me as a friend and I don't want this to change our relationship…"

"No Clark. I don't love you, I'm mean I don't…"

"If you are going to say that I'm a good friend please stop right here. I don't have listen to this again."

"It isn't that, Clark, I…"

When Lois was about to say how she really felt about him the waiter came and gave the check to Clark. After paying he and Lois started to walk toward the car. In complete silence they got in the car. And when they stopped in front of the number 344 Clinton Street, Lois continued.

"Clark, what I was trying to say is that I love you and wanted to tell you this for so long, since I found it out at my wedding. I was going to tell you that day when we were in front of the Planet but you said that you didn't loved me and just said it to try to stop my wedding with Luthor. I thought that I could screw our friendship up …"

Lois was, once again, babbling but Clark loved it and this time more than he ever had. He wasn't paying attention to what she was saying he had heard enough. When Lois saw Clark smiling at her she knew that she was babbling.

"I'm talking too much, right?" she said grinning back to him as he nodded.

"But you know something, I love it," he turned and kissed her softly, rubbing his lips on hers.

Suddenly their kiss got deeper, Lois rested her hands on Clark's shoulder as he wrapped his arms in her waist and tried to get closer. Lois' kisses moved across his face till she got to his earlobe, when she kissed it he moaned. He kissed her neck and then turned back to her mouth, he started to rub his tongue in her inner lips, gasping for air she broke the kiss.

"I guess you'd better get going," she said.

"We can finish this conversation tomorrow," she said slyly and kissed him again.

"Good night"
